How To Control Night Eating Syndrome?
Management of night eating syndrome is detailed below
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic,
Night eating syndrome (NES) is characterized by excessive eating during dinner and after dinner hours and morning anorexia. It persists in 1-2% of the population and several genetic, biologic and environmental factors can contribute to NES.
The first step in management is to make sure that you eat breakfast and lunch. Do not skip the morning meals even if you do not feel hungry. Skipping meals in the morning and noon hours can cause excessive hunger and eating at night.
Choice of food: Avoid high calorie starchy, sugary and processed food. Include protein rich diets like chicken breast, Fish etc, vegetables and fruit.
Eat small frequent meals.
Stress can be associated with NES. You can practice relaxation techniques like meditation, yoga, exercise etc to manage stress.
Some people will also feel depressed and shameful of the habit. Please do not blame yourself as several factors, not in your control can cause NES. A trial of medications like Zoloft (SSRIs) can be tried.
Along with the above measures, cognitive behavioral therapy can also help.
Please be advised to follow up with a psychiatrist/psychotherapist for further management. Since you are on Synthroid, please check your thyroid levels also. Oversupplementation with thyroid hormone can also lead to excessive hunger and eating.
