Is An Enlarged Spleen Normal With Bronchiolitis?
Question: hi, my almost 6 month old has bronchiolitis for the 3rd time. At her check up they noticed her spleen is enlarged and palpable. She is only sleeping for 10 minuted at a time and her chest is extremely congested. Is an enlarged spleen normal with bronchiolitis?
Brief Answer:
Splenic enlargement can occur due to bronchiolitis
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
Broncholitis is a viral infection. Some children between the age of 6 months and 3 years have a propensity of getting such infections from time to time. Splenic enlargement is often found in certain viral infections. I would consider it to be regularly found in such a case. You need not worry about it. Treating the bronchiolitis would be the primary concern.
I would suggest you to get a home nebulizer. Give nebulizations with 2ml of 3% NaCl solution (hypertonic saline) at 4 hourly intervals. If she has wheezing, you can add half respule of asthalin solution.
Regards

Thanks for writing back.
You have not mentioned which antibiotic has been advised and whether it is being given in oral or intravenous form. If you could tell me the name of the antibiotic, I would be able to mention the right dose to be given to your child.
