Noticed White Patch At The Side Of My Tongue Should I Be Worried ?
I recently noticed white patch at the side of my tongue - not sure how long it has been there. I am 40 years old female and never smoked or drink. I have previously posted a question in this forum and mentioned that I have already taken two rounds of antibiotics for a dental abscess on my gum and canker sores on my tonsil. All of them went away but I continued to monitor my mouth closely. I am not quite sure how long this with streaks have been there but I just noticed it. Is this something I should consult with my Dr. or ENT? Should I need a biopsy? I also noticed the edge of my tongue is very bumpy - but this could and have some brown spots. Thanks.
Sub-mucous fibrosis
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for posting the query
I have examined the image thoroughly and I believe the white striae over the right side of the tongue is sub-mucous fibrosis.
Do not worry! It’s a small patch of fibrosis formed due to constant friction over the side of the tooth. There is no need of biopsy at this stage. Consult your dentist to clear tartar if any. The lateral side of the tongue seems to be normal. You need to keep a watch on the patch for any increase in size.
My advice to you is:
1. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants.
2. Maintain oral hygiene.
3. Avoid hot food and beverages as well as crisps and spicy food.
4. Drink plenty of water.
Hope this answers your query. Revert if you have any further queries.

May I ask another question - would patches like that ever turn into cancer? The reason I asked is because if it increases in size, what is the next step I should do? For tongue cancer or oral cancer (in general), what should I look out for? I have been stressed with all the issues in my mouth in the past month and so my apologies for asking this question. Thank you for your patience.
It's unusual for such a small patch to turn into cancer
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome back
1. would patches like that ever turn into cancer?
A: It's very unsual for such a small patch of submucous fibrosis to turn into cancer.
2. if it increases in size, what is the next step I should do?
A: If it increases in size, then you need to consult your doctor and they may suggest a biopsy of the tissue.
3. For tongue cancer or oral cancer (in general), what should I look out for?
A: You need to look for similar patches in the oral cavity and be wary of an increase in size or any flesh growth. I doubt this small patch could lead to tongue cancer or buccal mucosa cancer.
4. I have been stressed with all the issues in my mouth in the past month and so my apologies for asking this question.
A: I understand your concern and I'm really sorry about it. Don't worry! Try to lead a stress-free life, eat plenty of veggies and drink adequate water. Everything else will fall in line.
I would be glad to answer any number of questions.
Hope this clarifies your doubts. Wish you good health.
