Brief Answer:
Positive or enlarged jugulodigastric lymph node...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

The JDN + is as abbreviation used for the positive or enlarged Jugulodigastric lymph node.

The location of this group of lymph nodes is behind the angle of the mandible. These group of lymph nodes drain the lymph from the tonsils as well as the pharyngeal wall.

The lymph nodes are like policemen of our body which get enlarged, indicating an ongoing infection in the body. These nodes once they get enlarged regress back with a course of appropriate antibiotics. But, occasionally it can remain there even after the infection has subsided and it is absolutely normal.

Ultrasound or CT scan is recommended only if the size is more than 1cm in diameter or when the doctor suspects malignancy in the throat. It is routinely not advised.

Hope this answers your query; I'll be available for the follow up queries.

Brief Answer:
It is not a matter of concern in your case...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing back

In your case, I don't think it's a serious issue. As I mentioned in my earlier response it may or may not regress with the antibiotics. And, the presence of the same is not a matter of concern.

Those individuals having repeated throat infections will have permanently enlarged nodes which is absolutely normal. Indeed, if severe pain is noticed on touching the nodes, then you should get it to the attention of the concerned doctor.

GERD is not a cause for the enlargement of the jugulodigastric lymph node.

Hope this clarifies your doubts.

Brief Answer:
It may take days to weeks to regress... In some cases, it may not regress..

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

Welcome back,

There is no hard and fast rule that the lymph nodes do regress within a particular period. Some does regress as soon as the antibiotics are started. Few nodes take a couple of weeks to regress following the course of antibiotics. Seldom the nodes do not regress even after multiple antibiotics, that is because of recurrent inflammation or infection in the area which drains the nodes.

Trust me, in your case, it is not a thing to worry; the nodes are still persisting because of recurrent throat infection and the present throat inflammation.

Hope this clarifies your doubts. Revert back to me if you have any other doubts.

Brief Answer:
Please do not worry about the presence of the neck nodes...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Welcome back

I can assure you, the nodes you are having are not of much significance and they may regress after some days, once you finish your antibiotic course.

Also, I would like to may a point over here that, you need to take care of your acidity problem. Constant acid reflux from the stomach into the throat can burn the throat and induce inflammation. And, when there is inflammation, the neck nodes does take some more time to regress. Hence, you need to address this problem along with your sore throat.

Hope this clarifies your doubts. Wish you good health.

Frankly speaking, I would not suggest you to get FNAC done. To clear your doubts and anxiety, you can get it done. But, there is no harm in doing a FNAC.

Brief Answer:
If the nodes are greater than 1 cm in diameter with associated symptoms...

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

Welcome back

The lymph nodes are considered significant if they are more than 1cm, multiple, matted, hard in consistency and any other group of lymph nodes enlarged (found below the arm pits, over the clavicle or else where in the body). Most of these findings are confirmed with an ultrasound of the nodes.

Secondly, along with the lymph nodes there should be other positive findings such as any growth in the area supplied by that particular group of lymph nodes. Any significant variations in the total blood count/differential count.

Hope this clarifies your doubts.

Brief Answer:
USG guided FNAC is a safer option for small neck nodes...

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

Thanks for writing back

According to the old USG report there are no significant abnormalities noted in the neck. Hence, don't worry about the neck nodes.

Secondly, because the size of the lymph node in the jugulo-digastric region is very small it would be difficult to pierce the needle by palpating the node, hence it would be wiser and safer to get USG guided FNAC.

Hope this clarifies your doubts.

Brief Answer:
It's an inflammatory node which is considered insignificant...

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

Thanks for writing back and posting the reports.

I have gone through the reports thoroughly and understood that you have few lymph nodes in the sub-mandibular region (below the mandible) which are reactive in nature. Reactive lymph nodes means those nodes which have got enlarged secondary to the infection in the oral cavity. This will usually regress once the antibiotic course is completed. But in the report, there is no mention of Jugulo-digastric group of lymph nodes; which implies, there is no significant abnormality noted in the latter region.

Hence, do not worry about the size of the lymph nodes mentioned in the present report as it just a reactionary node which has got enlarged secondary to the inflammation in the oral cavity and is not of much significance. So, please be relaxed, you don't have any major issues.

Hope this clarifies your doubts. Wish you good health.
