Suggest Treatment For Cough And Vomiting

default
Posted on Thu, 20 Oct 2016
Question: My grand daughter is so miserable with her cough, it wakes her at night almost to the point of vomiting. Had her in to see doc, all looks good. Can I give her adult nyquil in a smaller dose? She weighs 93.4 pounds.

Brief Answer:
Steam inhalation would be greatly beneficial.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such symptoms are due to viral infections. I would not recommend use of Nyquil (in both children and adults) as it contains dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant. What needs to be given is a mucolytic instead. You may give her cetirizine syrup once daily for the next few days. Give steam inhalation to your grandchild. It helps in reducing the congestion. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief.

You need to be patient. Irrespective of treatment it usually takes 3-7 days to resolve.

Hopefully that would help. Feel free to write back in case of further queries.

I thank you for that info, but it has been 2 weeks with this cough, and it is yearly around this season of autumn. What is cetrizine syrup? I am already using mucinex nighttime for kids. Is that different? patient is hard to be when the coughing fits cause her to vomit and panic. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Clinical evaluation would help.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

Two weeks of cough is unusual and calls for a clinical examination. The possibility of superadded infections needs to be evaluated. Cetirizine is an antiallergic. It helps since an allergic component is usually associated. Montek LC Kid (montelukast + levocetirizine) works even better but is a prescription medicine. Mucinex is a mucolytic and should help (it acts in direction reverse to that of dextromethorphan).

I understand that excessive coughing can trigger vomiting. Steam inhalation would help. Please do not panic.

Feel free to write back.
