Suggest Treatment For Hard Lump On Rib

Question: Son has a hard lump on rib. About the size of a quarter in diameter and about as thick as three quarters. He is a high school wrestler and thinks he hurt it in practice. Had X-ray today and showed nothing. On right side back about 4 ribs up from bottom. Lots of pain. Some people say rib may be popped out of place?

It could be haematoma.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
As your son is a wrestler,muscle might have got torn and lead to Haematoma, collection of blood.
Unless there is severe trauma,rib bone doesn't get injured.

Only Bony injuries and Collection in the pleura are easily seen in X ray chest.
Please consult a General surgeon or Thoracic surgeon and get examined clinically. He may ask for Ultrasound of the Chest.CT scan will give definitive diagnosis.

Usually, I would prescribe Antibiotic like Cefuroxime tablet along with anti inflammatory tablet to my patients with similar complaints till the reports come.

The skin over the swelling can be normal in spite of haematoma.
