Suggest Treatment For Pain In Achilles Tendon After Taking Levofloxacin For Diverticulitis

default
Posted on Wed, 1 Apr 2015
Question: I was given Levthyroxine for diverticulitis a few weeks ago. I only took it for 5 days. As a result my Achilles tendon left leg became very sore and I am lame. My Primary care dr. sent me to Podiatry and that doctor put me into a knee high boot that I find very uncomfortable and a hazard as I must climb 21 stairs to access my condo. It has been 3 weeks. I am going to Physical Therapy today but cannot imagine what they can do for an already sore tendon. What do you think I can do to further healing? I am 86 yrs. old, still active and in pretty good health for my age.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Very nice to know that you are active, in a pretty good health and walk up 21 stairs to your condo.
I am sorry to say that I could not understand why were you given Levothyroxine. It is surely not given for Diverticulitis. May I please know the exact reason this was given.
Soreness of the left Achilles tendon needs a different type of treatment. The first and foremost part of any soreness is ''rest'' as a thumb rule. Knee-high boot must have been given to give immobility to the ankle joint, Achilles tendon being the main moving tendon of this joint..
Physical therapy is to be started after the healing of the sore tendon.
I would suggest you the following:
-Strict rest to the ankle joint till the soreness is gone.
-Anti-inflammatory tablets like Ibuprofen or whichever you Doctor must have prescribed for reducing the swelling, pain and tenderness.
-May I please suggest you a good home-therapy, this helps all my patients and would help you too. Please read carefully. Take a tall bucket or a container where you can rest-in your foot and leg comfortably dipped in up to knee joint. Add water to the level. Go on adding common salt till it is getting dissolved to make this as a concentrated solution. Make this solution warm. Check with the back of your palm so that it can be tolerated by the back of hand (this being the most sensitive) to avoid scalds as the sensitivity of the foot and leg is far less than the hand. This is very important and to be strictly done every time you are doing warm saline fomentation (as this is called).
Pour this solution in the bucket and let the foot and leg get warm saline water fomentation.
Use the same solution every time; no need to make fresh solutions irrespective it may look dirty after some uses.
I hope you understood this. Please read this again and ask me if you need any clarification.
I am hopeful this will help you the most.

Of course you may please consult an Orthopedic Surgeon if you need to.

I hope this answer helps you and answers your queries to your satisfaction.
Please fell free to ask for further relevant queries if you need to or if you feel there is a gap-of-communication.

Wishing you the best and complete recovery and a very very healthy and happy life.
With Warm Regards.

Dear Dr. Chandrakant: You asked why I was given the Levothyroxine. I gave you the wrong name-- I was put on two antibiotics called Levofloxacin and Metronidazole. I later asked my Primary Care Dr. why two and she said neither was full spectrum. It is the Levofloxacin that caused the tendon problem.
I am a member of Kaiser Permanente and have been for some years. I like many aspects of it but this recent incident gives me doubts. However, with the broken health care in the US run by insurance companies and the pharmacy cos. I take the best I can afford.
I will try the saline solution. Do you by any chance mean Epsom Salts for the salt?
Thanks. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Common / Table salt

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback, Madam.
Yes, I can understand the system all over the world is changing, not much of the personal touches in Medical practice at the moment and added new systems of Insurance and all.

Understood, that Levoflaxacin might have caused the problem.
I mean Common salt, means Sodium Chloride (NaCl) also called as Table salt. Not Epsom.
Please start Warm saline solution fomentation at the earliest.

Note: For further queries, consult a joint and bone specialist, an Orthopaedic surgeon. Book a Call now.
