What Causes Excessive Thirst And Nausea Along With Shortness Of Breath?

default
Posted on Mon, 31 Aug 2015
Question: Last night, I suddenly felt very thirsty. (not just a bit, it was like I had not had a drink in days) Then all at once I felt nauseated and almost faint, I was kind of cold in my core and had shortness of breath but my heart did not feel like it was racing. I was in the shower at the time and sank fast to the floor because I felt I could not hold myself up anymore. I felt quite panicked. I sat on the floor of the shower for around 5 to 10 minutes and most of the symptoms went away. I was still shaking and a bit wobbly but went strait away to bed. I feel fine today, just a bit tired. Any ideas? I am a 39 year old woman with no know health issues other than being over weight.

Brief Answer:
Panic attack, diabetes workup

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Feeling thirsty and being overweight warrants a diabetes workup. Fasting blood sugar, HBA1c should be done. The acute thirsty feeling episode appears to be a panic attack that got better. If the episode recurs you should get an EKG done soon to rule out any cardiac cause for the symptoms. Beta blockers and lorazepam in low doses can be prescribed to prevent future recurrence. Blood electrolytes and a full blood count can also be advised as part of the workup in consultation with your doctor.

Wishing you best of health
