What Causes Infection Post Surgery For A Kidney Stone?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Apr 2015
Question: Had surgery for a kidney stone but developed a bad infection.Loaded up on Iv's and antibiotics. Had a CAT scan done to see if blood clots ,but found 2 abnormal lymph nodes close to the heart.Had a biopsy, but was a small sample and Dr not sure he got enough- was negative of what was examined. The 2nd node is harder to get to and they want to do a 2nd biopsy-surgery. Going to wait a few weeks (overloaded lymph system ??)and do another CAT scan to see if nodes decreased in size or do the biopsy if not.Meanwhile if I try to detox and do Lymph massage per therapist, would this spread the cancer if present ? Should a PET scan be done instead of a CAT scan?
Wanted a Dr in my State to answer this question, so submitted to above Dr.

Brief Answer:
Abnormal lymph nodes in chest

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Abnormal lymph nodes in your chest (detected incidentally) is unlikely to be reactive lymphnodes.
In older patients, the differential diagnosis includes primary lung cancer (especially among smokers), lymphomas, metastatic carcinoma , tuberculosis, fungal infection, and sarcoidosis.
CT and MRI are comparably accurate (65–90%) for mediastinal lymphadenopathy.

Positron emission tomography (PET), or preferably CT-PET should be done.. PET scanning attempts to identify sites of malignancy based on glucose metabolism by measuring the uptake of fluorodeoxyglucose F18.

CT-PET has been found to be superior in identifying pathologically enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes and extrathoracic metastases.

Detox and Lymph massage per therapist are unlikely to help and hence not recommended.
