Posted on Wed, 12 Oct 2016
Question: Why do I have strange pulsating in the liver area. At times it goes away but then comes back. Only been noticing in the last week or so. I am an overweight 67 year old woman. I quickly asked my doc and she just responded that I am squishing my liver which is sometimes true but not always.
Should I be concerned

Brief Answer:
Yes, should be concerned .

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thank for your query, albeit short and specific.
To recapitulate: Female/67 - strange pulsating in the liver area - goes away but comes back - last week - overweight - Doctor responded that you are squishing your liver ... wants to know whether to be concerned...

My views:
Pulsating pain in the liver area needs clinical evaluation, examination and relevant investigations and hence proper diagnosis and management.
I would advise you the following:
Ultrasonography and with color doppler mode of the abdomen, particularly in the upper abdomen. If there is a positive finding, then further investigations like contrast enhanced CT scan of the abdomen.
Clinical evaluation and actual physical examination to see for any mass, tenderness, enlargement of liver and most importantly for costochondritis.

Pulsating in liver area should be concerning and thoroughly investigated.

I hope this answer helps you in early and proper diagnosis and treatment as needed once a proper diagnosis has been made.
