Posted on Thu, 16 Feb 2017
Question: hi there, im a 29 year old female. My symptoms started 3 months ago in october 2016 when I went on holidays. I was extremely anxious at the time as I have a history of anxiety of depression. It was my first time taking my daughter on a plane flight which was almost 2 hours. Followed by public transport. We also went on a 20 minute boat ride whilst we were there. I have almost constant swaying/rocking feeling. My gp thinks its all from anxiety and possibly tmj. However I have heard of Mal de debarquement, is it possible that this is what I have? I am extremely worried that this is my life now. Please help

Brief Answer:
The possibility is rare because it's incidence is very rare

Detailed Answer:
Hi thanks for asking from HCM

I can understand your concern. You have history of anxiety and depression. Prior to that flight you were anxious and then during flight you developed these symptoms. You are 29 and haven't experienced such symptoms in such situations before. Both these factors are against the possibility of Mal de debarquement.

The disorder is a rare neurological disorder. In this disorder constant rocking or swaying sensation are seen commonly during flight or sea travel. Vestibular system abnormalities are seen commonly too. You have just experienced these symptoms once, that too during anxiety so the possibility is very rare.

Remain relaxed and don't anticipate. Due to anxiety you developed the symptoms and with medicines such symptoms will not occur again.

Thanks Take care

thank you for answering my question, so your saying you agree with my doctor that my constant 24/7 rocking swaying feeling is associated with anxiety?
