default
Posted on Thu, 2 Mar 2017
Question: Good evening. Have an 8yr pld son whose complaining of abdominal pain and its been 6 days now. Been to hospital and they've done urine and blood tests, stomach xrays, ultra sounds and did a ct scan yesterday and apparently all are coming up ok but it seems nothing is changing and the time between the pains is decreasing and the severity and length of the episodes is increasing. He has been in almost continuos pain for about 5hrs now and was discharged from the childrens hospital because they say they can't do anything else for him beside pain relief and heat packs (which have little to no effect). They say they suspect its just a virus and he's body will fight it off on its own. Please help as I am worried that its been almost a week now and he is not improving and is constantly crying and in pain.

Hi
Thanks for choosing HCM for your query!

Constant abdominal pain can be a sign of-
Appendicitis,Gallstones,Stomach ulcer,Hernia or other bowel twisting, blockage or obstruction,Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis)
Intussusception, caused by part of the intestine being pulled inward into itself,Stomach ulcer,Torsion (twisting) of the testicle. But as told by you almost all his tests from CT to USG are normal. In that case lets move to some of the common but neglected cases of abdominal pain, and they are-
Constipation,Gas,Heartburn or acid reflux,Stomach flu or food poisoning.
Ask your doctor to prescribe him with some antispasmodics like Dicyclomine along with antacids and analgesics.Treat him symptomatically and see if he is improving.A probiotic should be given to him twice daily.

Discuss the option with your gastro and see if patient is improving in next 24 hours.

Thanks!
