Are Cramps In Legs And Hands A Side Effect Of Consuming Bumetanide And/or Spironolactone?
I have COPD and PAH. I am taking Bumetanide 1mg per day and have started Spironolactone 25 mg per day. Since beginning Spironolactone 1/31/16 I have been getting leg and foot cramps. Usually at night when asleep. About 3 to 4 times per night. Now, I am getting leg and hand cramps during the day. Question: Could this be a side effect of either or both of these two drugs? Thank you.
Hi. The symptoms appear to be due to the side effects of Spironolactone. Spironolactone is an Aldosterone receptor antagonist that causes the kidneys to remove sodium & water from the body with reduced losses of potassium which results into hyperkalemia (increased serum potassium level). The muscle cramps in the legs and hands occur due to hyperkalemia. I would therefore advise you to stop taking Spironolactone immediately and consult your treating doctor for an alternate but a safer medication. Hope this answers your query.
