Are High Intensity Cardio Exercises Related To Heavy Menstrual Flow?

My 16-year old daughter has been steadily gaining weight even though she gets an average of 2 hours of high-intensity cardio 4-6 days per week due to being on the high school dance team and taking additional dance classes at a dance studio. Additionally, she has been complaining of dizziness and her period the last two days has been so heavy that she has been leaking through a super sized tampon within an hour. She has been on bc for approx a year to help with the heavy periods. We had her thyroid checked recently, and it was found to be normal. I m stumped. She does see a pediatric psychiatry Nurse Practitioner for anxiety and takes Zoloft.

Hello,

Heavy menstruation flow is commonly caused due to high estrogen level that cause thick uterine walls & hence heavy periods. No exercises do not cause heavy flow. Adverse effects of some anti depressants, SSRI's can cause hormonal imbalances causing irregular menstruation or menorrhagia (heavy, prolonged menstruation). You are suggested to get clinically assessed by a gynae. Get Blood & Imaging tests done to rule out hormonal imbalances, cysts or fibroids.

Your daughter will be treated (medicine / surgery) according to the severity of the pathology detected. Take home made food, stay away from addictions if any. Inform the doctor about your symptoms of heavy periods to the treating doctor who has prescribed Zoloft, so that the medication can be replaced by another that suits you better. Do not stop any medication all of a sudden on your own without informing your treating doctor as it can cause withdrawal symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
