Can I Wear Tampons During My Periods?

I am an 11 year old girl. I am going on a field trip soon with lots of water activities. I have had my period since March. I think I will get it again on the day of the field trip. I have asked my mom for tampons before, but she said I am not old enough. Am I old enough for tampons?
