Hi My husband used to take Oxetol 300 mg per day earlier then reduced to oxetol 150 mg per day as he didn t had any seizures since 2002 so or many doctors suggested he can stop taking Oxetol as his EEG is ok and taking epilepsy medicine is not required now. Even after doctors suggestion to stop we continued his medicine till April 2017 but after his recent EEG with a renowned neurologist in India we stopped the medicine in April 2017. All was well but suddenly 2 days back he got a seizure i.e on 15thSept 2017, we are in Brussels now and consulted a doctor herein... she examined him and conducted and EEG and said all reports to be normal but he has to continue with the Epilepsy drug. She prescribed Tegretol CR 200. I am confused what shud I do..shud I continue with tegretol CR 200 as recommended by her or switch back to OXETOL 150/300 mg... Plz help me whether both drugs are same or are different..?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Tegretal is having Carbamazepine.
Oxetol is having Oxcarbamazepine.
Both are Good anti epileptic drugs.
Both are almost same.
The only difference is that Oxetol is newer and better version of Tegretal. It is having Oxcarbamazepine which is slightly better and having lesser side effects as compare to plain Carbamazepine.
So in my opinion, you continue with Oxetol.
Hope I have answered your query.
