Can Excessive Exercise And Diet Cause Onset Of Periods?

So I had my period a couple weeks ago, right around the 12th (I think it was a little late, too) and then on the 31st of Jan of 1st of Feb I started spotting. Then on the 3rd or 4th it turned into a full blown period. My periods usually make themselves known with cramps, but this one just crept up on me. They also usually last for 3-4 days, but this one is still going on. I know that it hasn't been going on that long, but I am still concerned. On the 26th of Jan I started a 1200-1300 calorie diet (with nutritious foods that I am only partially used to eating) and I started walking two miles a day (a cople days before the blizzard I did 4.) I have read where nutrition changes and excessive excercise can trigger periods, but I don't know if the time frame allows for any such connecton or if I am making that many changes. I have had inconsistencies in the past (about three years ago when I was a senior in high school my period stopped for a few months) but I don't know if this and that are related at all.
