Can Irregular Period Cause Abnormal Smear Tests?

thankyou i have a severely abnormal smear test result havnt seen it but nurse told me that it was severe, is this common as i am 50 yrs old and, never missed a smear test, how could this have gone from normal to severe in three years, is it possible that some of the cells will revert to normal on their own and lastly i am going through the menopause periods very irregular at the moment could this have had effect on result
