Can Using Benadryl Be Safe For Swelling And Redness In Ear?

my 2 year old son woke up with a VERY swollen and red ear, not all of his ear, from about the middle up, there are tiny bubbles on his ear, he is not acting like it is bothering him, he has no fever or other issues that I can see, I called his Dr. office and was told to put Benadryl and ice on it, and if it did not get better to take him to Urgent Care. I do not have Benadryl, but I do have Aveeno, Neosporin and Triple Antibiotic Ointment, my concern is that I recently got over MRSA for the second time, the first time I had it, it was on my earlobe and my ear was very large, I do not see any definite hard bumps on his ear. should I be concerned?
