Could Long-term Severe Depression And Anxiety Cause Neurological Damage?

I am a relative of a young adult who has been experiencing severe depression and anxiety. They have been forced to drop out of university, which was essential for their sense of purpose and belonging. The depression did not result in noticeable impairment, but in the past few months, they became so debilitated that they were unable to do anything on their own. They have loss of motivation, impaired decision-making skills and short-term memory. The constant depression and severe anxiety at all times leads to inability to focus in any situation. I am very concerned about the possibility of neurological damage, since they have experienced severe depression and anxiety for a long time. Could it be irreversible? What should I do to help them?
