Have Itching And Rash On Legs. Have Casts On Legs. Taking Claritin. What To Do?

My son has casts on both of his legs. His tows are open but it covers his foot to his knees on both legs. The first day he began itching started that evening and 3 days later he had a rash on all exposed areas around the casts thighs and up to his buttocks area. He was itching before the rash appeared yesterday. I was giving him a claritin. Any ideas? Could he be allergic to the casting material, is there a cast rash, is it just to hot and is it a heat rash?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is definitely possible that he may be allergic to the cast material. There are different types of casts and it is possible that based on his reaction , his doctor may suggest that it be changed to a another material.

In addition you may want to try using the drowsy antihistamines, if they would not interfere with his functioning too much. These older antihistamines are stronger and provide greater relief than the non drowsy ones.

I hope this helps
