Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello..So, I started to notice a little amount of blood in my stool a few months back. It stopped so I left it alone, but recently in the last 2 days I barely pushed and the whole bowl turned red..I m wondering what type of doctor to go to. And I ve lost weight in the last year or so..but not too much. Also, I don t have to have a bm everyday. Some times it takes 3 or 4 days till I have to go, but I eat ALL the time. I just don t get it.
You can go to your GP first, he or she would be able to examine you, initiate the appropriate tests and refer you to a gastroenterologist for further assessment.
Blood in the stool can be due to different causes such as: (1) infection (2) trauma to the anus (3)cancer (4)benign (non cancerous) growths (5)diverticular disease- the presence of out pockets or out pouches in the colon (6)hemorrhoids
The treatment would depend on the cause found.
I hope this helps
