my 4.5 year old son has sub clinical hypothyroid he takes eltroxcine 25 for 2 years now . His doctor wants him to stop it for two weeks to carry blood tests to see how things are going . I stopped it 6 days ago but he is becoming more sleepy and his leg joints are hurting him . Should I start the medicine now or shall I wait ? also if I wait what are the complications that might occur?
Hi, Welcome to HCM. I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Subclinical hypothyroidism is not a serious issue. If you feel like your child is now developing symptoms of hypothyroidism, it is better to do a thyroid function test before starting the treatment.
If thyroid function tests is showing T3 and T4 on lower side, you can consult your doctor and restart the medications. If not wait for 3-4 weeks and do a repeat test to see if your child really needs thyroxine.
Additional tests that will help you to guide treatment are anti thyroid antibodies and ultrasound. An abnormal ultrasound and positive anti thyroid antibodies suggest continued treatment with thyroxine.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help With warm regards, Dr Ajish TP (MD,DM) Consultant Endocrinologist.
