Is General Anesthesia Or Spinal Anaesthesia Recommended For A Knee Replacement Surgery?

For knee replacement surgery for a person that is 74, has had 3 heart attacks, and a bypass surgery, would you advise a spinal block or general anesthesia? Person has had no heart problems in 12 years and in his annual physical, his condition is described as above average. Thanks for your advice! Arthur

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Since the patient had history cardiac illness and heart attacks in the past, spinal anaesthesia is highly dangerous and most anaesthetist will go for general anaesthesia. Other options like regional block and epidural are also available depending on other parameters also. Consult an experienced anaesthetist for expert opinion.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain
