Suggest Treatment For Communicating Hydrocephalus

Hi,
My brother who has TBM, has a VP shunt inserted to treat Communicating hydrocephalus. The shunt is working fine, my question is, is there a possibility of the natural CSF absorption mechanism to start working over a period of time or would the shunt be the the only communicating mechanism to regulate CSF pressure for ever. Or in other words if the shunt develops any complication like infection etc can the shunt be removed permanently or does it always need to be replaced?
