Suggest Treatment For Pain In Ankle Joint

My ankle hurts like it's sprained, but I don't believe it is. The pain comes on spontaneously. The other night the pain woke me up. This has occurred off ad on over a long period of time (2-3 years?). Sometimes I can't even support myself..the ankle seems to give out. What gives? I am still able to walk in walking shoes, but the pain (more the awareness) is still there in the background. When I take my shoes off, it starts hurting all over again. I'm not a novice walker. I've been walking off and on for years (used to jog, but gave that up). Help! (I am 63 yr old female, 5'4", 130#)
