Hello !
Thank you for the question on HCM! I understand your concern.
Yes it is true, that it can cause
liver damage up to
liver failure. Liver failure resulting in fatalities has occurred in patients receiving
Valproate and its derivatives. These incidents usually have occurred during the first six months of treatment. Signs or liver damage would be non-specific symptoms such as malaise, weakness, lethargy, facial edema,
anorexia, and
vomiting.
But you have been using this drug for more than 7 years, so things are not very concerning.
I would recommend repeated full blood work and liver function tests every 3-6 months .
If everything is ok, there is nothing to worry about. It is a very effective drug, and I would not recommend to stop it if the tests are ok.
Other side effects beside the liver would be nausea , vomiting , hair loss, weight gain, allergic reactions, gait problems etc. But you have been using it for such a long time, and everything is fine.
Hope to have been of help!
Greetings!
