What Causes 2 Periods In A Month Along With Stomach Cramps?

I'm 49 years old, 5'2", 136lbs, no illnesses or medical problems...I'm healthy and relatively fit. I have been having 2 periods per month for the past 3 months. All periods are regular to heavy flow with moderate cramping, lasting from 4-7 days. I had my gyno check-up 5 months ago and all came back normal. I have told I have several small uteine fibroids, but "not a problem" per my doctor. Why am I getting 2 periods a month now?
