What Causes Black Spot On The Feet?

Last night I noticed by son who is 7.5 years old has a black area under on the bottom of his foot. It s about 3 inches long and about 2inches wide. He says it doesn t hurt. I ts been 24 hours and looks the same. Any ideas what this is. Could he have stepped on something and it s a bruise?
