What Causes Brown Blood In Menstrual Flow And Vaginal Irritation?

I've had my period for a a day now and this hasn't happened before so I'm a little worried.
Since I've gotten it, I've noticed a very light stinging sensation (or burning, I guess) at the vaginal opening which I thought may be irritation. However, since I got it I've also noticed that when I look at the pad I wear it's completely brown and has large clumps of brown all over the pad, too. I know that normally you have some tissue that comes out, but I've never had so much of it accumulating on my pad and in such a dark brown color; when i took a tissue to it, it resembled dirt almost.
I decided to ask about it because when I went to the bathroom and wiped just a few minutes ago, it was also brown on the tissue and resembled as if I'd wiped the other end... I know blood also normally is brown if it's old blood, but I've only had it for a day now and it's not the end of my cycle yet, either... any suggestions or help? Am I just looking into this too much?
