What Causes Delay In Periods?

i am 24 yrs old and i have had a delay of 10 days in my period. currently am in a relationship and have never had unprotected sex with my partner. doctor has prescribed me to take regestrone 5mg twice a day for 5 days. can you plz educate me of the reason for my delayed period and how long before i get my period after the medication.
