What Causes Diarrhea, runny Nose And Throat Tightness After Losartan Intake?

Have been taking Coreg 6.25 mg daily for about a month prescribed by my primary doctor. B/P got too high my cardiologist prescribed Losartan 25 mg; started taking it since 4/14/14. Have been experiencing diarrhea, runny nose, tightness in throat, tongue numbness and constant going to the bathroom. Shall I stop taking the Losartan?

Hello,

I read your message and understood your medical problem.

I see you have been on Losartan treatment since 2014 for controlling your hypertension. Losartan is an antagonist of angiotensin II receptor. It dilatates the blood vessels and thus reduces the blood pressure through the vasodilator mechanism.

Losartan is known for its common side effects that imitate a common cold or flu. Stuffy and runny nose, sore throat, fever etc. are usual symptoms seen after some time of losartan use. Also, diarrhea and frequent urination are very common too.

It looks like you are experiencing some side effects of losartan at the same time. This is not something to worry about. Symptoms will go away after the drug is stopped. They may last a couple of days after the drug has been stopped but this is normal because the drug needs some time to get completely eliminated by the kidneys.

On the other side, you take Coreg 6.25 mg daily. Coreg or carvedilol is a beta-blocker drug used to treat hypertension and heart failure. This drug may increase the blood sugar levels contributing to hyperglycemia and thus causes frequent urination. But this is not very common and happens in larger doses. So there is nothing wrong with Coreg.

The only drug you need to stop is losartan. Discuss with you doctor to substitute this drug with another one.

Hope this is helpful for you.

Thank you.

Dr. Albana.
