What Causes Inflammation And Pain In The Hip And Back?

I have had several hard falls to the left hip over the last two months (roller derby). The first time, I had a huge bruise (about 10 inches in diameter). I reinjured a month later and the pain was severe enough for me to go to my doctor. I have fallen directly onto the left hip and also directly onto the back of my hip bone on the left side on a hardwood floor without any padding. I had x-rays showing a small chip of bone outside of the hip joint. I also had a large, warm lump below the hip joint. It seemed to be getting better, but I then fell onto my left knee at home without any padding, which has now caused knee pain and swelling (which I expected) but also brought back the lump below the hip joint, which is very painful. It has been progressively getting worse since the latest fall. I have pain radiating up into my lower back, and the area of inflammation ranges from stabbing pain to aching pain to numbness. The lump is the size of a baseball and is firm to the touch. I am seeing my doctor again soon, but wanted some input on possible etiology of the pain. I've done lots of research and there are so many possibilities. I am not skating until I know what's wrong to prevent further injury. Thoughts? I'm wondering whether I should agree to an MRI if offered, but would feel silly to get such an expensive test if this is a hematoma and/or muscle spasms.
