What Causes Mucus From Throat During Morning Time?

Please type your query here...I have been hacking up hard mucus from the back of my throat for the past week or two, it is usually when i wake up, i feel something in the back of my throat and I have to hack and hack until it finally comes up, its usually green in color, what could this be?
