What Causes Muscle Spasms And Slurring Of Speech?

My husband has experienced muscle weakness in his legs and arms over the last year or two. He has also developed difficulty swallowing food, but tests show no blockages. He had a TIA Oct. of '09, but continues to have trouble with slurring speech at times and his voice will become softer. Last night he was having a very difficult breathing, like he had asthma and he was shivering but said his muscles felt like they were tightening or spasms. I've had ALS in the back of my mind, but am afraid to bring it up to him. Am I overreacting?
