What Causes Pain In Knuckles?

I've had knuckle pain in my right hand at the joint that joins the ring finger to the hand for a few months now. I have a feeling it stems from a game I played with a coworker, smacking our fists together as hard as we could. I know, not smart. Better than drugs. But, regardless, the knuckle pain is lingering.

I work at a grocery store and pick up cans all day by their tops, sometimes straining my fingers' actual ability to pick up an item in that fashion. I thought perhaps that might be a cause as well.

To explain, the pain is not constant and the swelling is barely noticeable and only by me. It only hurts when I move the ring finger up and down without bending the other knuckles in that finger. It also seems to be less knuckle pain and more surrounding tissue pain. Resolutions for pain? Should I consider an X-ray?
