What Causes Patchy And Brittle Hairs On The Beard?

my friend and i started growing beard and moustache on new year's day --- his one is long, silky, strong, while my one is patchy, hair is much shorter, and the hairs seem brittle in comparison, and are even diferent shades of colours while his is one dark colour ... am i lacking in something as my one seems deficient in many ways
