What Causes Recurrent Low Grade Pain In Eustachian Tubes And Sore Throat?

Hello, I am wondering about etiologies for recurrent low grade irrigation / pain in Eustachian tubes, some middle ear fluid but no overall congestion and low grade sore throat. This is #6 for the winter, after a course of antibiotics I am better but then about two weeks later it recurs. If I do not get antibiotics, then. It gets worse .fatigue, sinus infection and I get really sick. I don t get it in summer. Mostly October through May.

Hello,

Your symptoms are clearly related to inflammation of sinuses leading to upper respiratory tract infection. Your condition is called chronic rhinosinusitis. Causes are as follows:
1) Allergy
2) environmental pollutants
3) Gastroesophageal reflux
4) Deviated nasal septum
5) Nasal polyps
6) Cystic fibrosis (rare)

The symptoms are nasal congestion, headache, sore throat, and decreased smell and taste sensations. To those patients who come to my clinic with similar symptoms i prescribe the following:
1) It's the control of infection first so oral antibiotics, topical or oral glucocorticoids and irrigation with nasal saline or decongestants
2) Removal of the irritating agent if any
3) Garlic is known to reduce the congestion

So you can have more garlic added foods. Recurrent rhinosinusitis is to be treated surgically by FESS that expands as functional endoscopic sinus surgery. Do not get panicked as I mentioned surgery. It's not a major one and has many advantages like:
1) Removal of disease
2) Restores aeration of sinuses
3) Also restores proper drainage of sinuses
4) Restores eustachian tube and middle ear functions

It is a minor surgical procedure and will be done and you will be released from hospital in just 1 or 2 days. After the surgery you will be free from your symptoms. Your quality of life is improved. So please consult an ENT specialist and ask him about the surgical procedure.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
