What Causes Severe Anxiety And Mood Swings In A Child?
I have a child who has sensory issues with clothing, food and loud things. She is 14 and has had many behavior issues in school. She is very clumsy and socially resistant. She does not want to be a part of sports, etc. She has anxiety attacks and temper outbursts. I am at a loss to what is going on with her. I have taken her to counselors. Does she need further evaluation or Testing? Could she be Autistic?
Autism is generally diagnosed within the first few years of life and you would have noticed important changes earlier.
On the other hand, there is a spectrum of autism with milder forms, like Asperger syndrome, that shows in interactions and social relationships while language and the rest of the functions are ok.
She is also entering teen years and this may also be a contributing factor to issues of self-esteem and confidence and anxiety and depression are common in this age group as well.
She needs to be seen by a psychiatrist for children and have a proper evaluation to determine the diagnosis and have proper treatment.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
