What Causes Severe Leg Cramps After Taking Prednisone?

Hi, I am currently taking prednisone 5mg, 2 pills daily x 5 days for a respiratory lung disorder. i am on day 3 of the treatment and currently having severe leg cramps. I have taken prednisone previously and have never experienced this kind of reaction. Other than these cramps I feel finr. Should I be alarmed and contact my physician or is this a normal side effect. These cramps sre about a 5/10. otherwise I feel fine. Thanks Elizabeth

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Muscle weakness or cramps could be caused due to low potassium levels in the blood while taking medication Prednisone.

This side effect needs to be clinically evaluated. Hence, kindly consult Physician promptly for clinical evaluation and appropriate management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ashakiran S,
