My mother is 62 years old and has had a recurring scalp condition for the past 6 months or so. She has been seen by 2 dermatologists that cannot give a diagnosis. She has a couple of places on her scalp that build up 1/4-1/2", the build up becomes rock hard, smells horrible and begins to separate from the scalp clinging to the hair as it pulls up. The scalp underneath is bright pink and painful to the touch. Once the "build up" is completely separated from the scalp, it can be softened some by hair washing, enough to pull it off and clean it out of her hair. The scalp then appears to be healing, but then starts to build up again. The whole cycle seems to last about 4 weeks. She has had testing done for fungus and bacteria, both which came back negative. She has been treated with antibiotics, and numerous creams and topical medications which didn't help.
