What Causes Spotting Between Periods?

Almost 4 years ago I had plastic clips put on after the birth of my last child. Since then, my menstrual cycle has been right on each month. It normally occurs at the beginning, lasting 5 days a week and extremely heavy. As of January 29th, it has been spotting ever since. Nothing normal. What could possibly be the problem?
