What Causes Toe Nails Grow Out And Separate?

I had a total knee replacement in mid-jan of this year. In approximately March I noticed the half moon bed nails were turning rosy in color and thereafter, most of the nails on both my hands started to sparate. As of this writing, most of the nail beds are back to white and the nails are growing out. Similar situation with most of my toe nails. I lost the two big nails and several others on each foot -- they are now growing out.
In additioin, at about the same time, I noticed my hair was falling out more than normal.
Can you explain the reasons for the above? I have never had these situations previously, take excellent vitamins, and am concerned.
I will be 75 in 3 weeks, am 5' 9 1/2 inches, and weigh 97 lbs. My medical history is all orthopaedic - corrective foot surgeries, two shoulder replacements, etc. Thank you.2
