What Causes Weakness In Leg Of A Teenager?

Hello Doctor, my son is 15 year old (55 kg. weight) some times he tells weakness in his legs, after blood test it was hypokalemia, when we take him Potassium Chloride syrup he gets recovered after 2-3 hours. He is otherwise healthy, no bad habits, can you tell me the cause and permanent remedy. I noticed when he eats a lot of rice or starchy food he gets problem. I have the same hypokalemic paralysis problem in my childhood which gets recovered with age (also by Pranayama).

Hi,

The symptoms you have mentioned are typically of hypokalemic periodic paralysis. The following are usually seen in this:
1) It is mostly hereditary
2) It recovers after taking oral potassium chloride
3) it usually starts between 10- 16 yrs of age
4) It may be mild to severe and involves mostly thighs and calves
5) It occurs after a high carbohydrate meal
6) As the advances it decreases in frequency almost stops by 50 yrs of age.

Treatment is as follows:
1) Oral potassium chloride 1meq/kg body weight is to be given and if it doesn't recover, up to 100meq can be given
2) If the attacks are frequent, prophylactic treatment can be started as tab. Dichlorphenamide 50-100mg twice daily
It's a self limiting condition so only symptomatic treatment in the place of permanent remedy.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
