What Does Swelling In The Left Foot Indicate?

For three weeks, my left foot has been swollen. It sometimes tingles, usually at night, and my fourth toe feels as though someone has stepped on it. I have had type 2 diabetes for three years, but, have never experienced anything like this. The symptoms don t keep me awake; it s just an odd sensation in my foot. My right foot, by the way, is fine. Thank you for any help you can give me.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Swelling in left foot with awkward sensations in diabetic patient is more suggestive of cellulitis (infection of skin). So better to consult doctor and get done clinical examination of left foot. You may need x ray of left foot to rule out any internal bone injury. If it is cellulitis then you will need oral antibiotics, anti inflammatory drugs and antibiotic cream for local application. Strict control of diabetes is needed in any case. Don't worry, you will be alright with all these.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
