What Does Weight Loss, Sore Throat And Anxiety With HIV Test Negative Mean?

Hi Doctors,

I have few questions to ask. In Last week of September 2010, I had oral protected sex (with condom) with few ladies (CSW). Again, in last week of October 2010, I had oral protected sex with few ladies (CSW) but on 2nd November, I had protected anal sex with a CSW (I used 02 condoms) for about two minutes and as far as I remember, both condoms were intact. I got elisa hiv test negative on 08th December 2010 but I suddenly noted weight loss of about 5 Kg in the last 2/3 months. Recently in 17th November, I had cold symptoms like wet cough, stuffy nose and pain in the throat that went away with antibiotics in 02 days. I am now in the state of great anxiety although my elisa test (hiv 1&2) are negative after anal sex about 5 weeks and 2 days. Please let me know the risk of being infected with hiv ??

Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic

Protected Oral Sex is considered to be a safe sexual encounter and you don't need to worry about that. This has also been substantiated by negative elisa test in december.
Regarding anal sex, it is not clear from your query whether it was a protected act or not. Unprotected anal sex is a risk factor for transmission of Hiv whereas protected sex is safe.
Therefore it is important to interpret weight loss and non-specific flu like symptoms based on the fact whether your recent sexual contact was safe or unsafe.
Though your recent test for Hiv has turned out to be negative but it cannot be taken as a conclusive test.
Even though most of the infected individuals develop antibodies to Hiv by 1 month that can be detected by tests, however it is a recommendation to repeat the test at 12 weeks.
Therefore I would suggest a repeat test at 12 weeks for a conclusive result.

Regards
