My 51 year old brother was hospitalized last year for two silent massive heart attacks and had to have open heart surgery: CABG (6 bypass graphs) & a Dor procedure (reconstruction of his ventricle). This past October he had a ring put around his Mitro Valve for MR (mitro valve regurgitation). This past month, he was hospitalized again for septic shock. Through blood cultures, the hospital determined that he had a vegetation or bacterial growth around his Mitro Valve and a large abscess in his lower back (lumbar 2 through 5). This week he had a lumbar laminectomy to remove most of the abscess in his lower back. He is stable and his BP is adequate now without taking Norephrine IV. He is still receiving IV antibiotics Gentamycin, Naficillan, & Rifampin through his subclavical central line. Can you tell me, after he is discharged from the hospital, what I should expect his treatment to be? My guess is that he will need a PICC line and continued antibiotics for about 8 weeks, but I do not know HOW WILL THEY BE ADMINISTERED AND HOW OFTEN??? Do we need to find a inpatient rehabilitation facility for him to live in?
