Good day Dr. Kelly Starrett,
I had a very bad left ankle sprain (lateral and medial) injury back in November 2017 of last year playing soccer the day after Thanksgiving and I had done two X-rays at the ER in the hospital in December to see if there were any fractures (I could not see my doctor until January because I was doing seasonal for UPS and I was working from 8am to 7pm Monday to Fridays). Thank God there was none but I’ve went to a podiatrist and he confirmed that I had to do physical therapy. So I’ve done physical therapy from January to early March of 2018 and even though the swelling went down, I still was not able to get the swelling fully down to 100%. My insurance called and said I could not go to physical therapy no more for the year due to the fact that I’ve used up the limited number of visits to go back. I’ve even still was going to the gym after December, doing Zercher Squats and Deadlifts (Lucky for me I could still lift heavy even when my ankle is not 100%).
So I went back to the podiatrist and did MRI and results came back saying that the tendons and ligaments are intact but only had a heel bone spur and some plantar fasciitis. So I’ve decided to watch YouTube videos and even got your ebooks, Supple Leopard, and Ready to Run to understand the body a lot more and even found out that yes I have flat foot to so all now I am in a transition to get into minimalist/barefoot footwear. I’ve even used diuretics last month taking a risk to use it and it actually in 3 to 4 days decreased the rest of the edema that was present on my ankle and I don’t feel plantar fasciitis and no more heel bone spur and I was very very happy.
Now I did the ankle mobility test and as you stated in your book Ready to Run that if a pinching or bony block feeling is felt at the front of the ankle then it is an impingement and to use a band distraction joint mobilization to help increase the bones to glide each other, but I would assume that it is for if a person feels the pinch feeling right dead on in the center of the ankle, but in my case I feel the weird pinching sensation more to the center right side part of the left ankle, not much in the center or left but more of the center to right side of my left ankle each time I do the band mobilization going passed my toes and holding it for 5 seconds.
So my question is that still consider an impingement and is what I am doing the correct treatment for it and to continue doing it? Or it is something else going on maybe it’s the tendon/ligament there? And I should be doing something else or adding a different treatment for it along with the band mobilization treatment? (I wish I can send an attachment of a picture of where I’ve used my marker to show where I am feeling it so it would make life easier for you but I can’t on your website unless you respond back to my message lol. )
Hope to hear back from you emailing you all the way from Brooklyn, NY
Best,
Anton Scott
