Hello Doctor,
My son who is 9 years old was bitten by a stray dog on 28th April'16. He was bitten by a street dog which often passes through our street on daily basis. Dog has attacked the kid from backward and it was not a provoked incident. Wound was was on to the right leg just below the knee. Initially, we washed the wound with Dettol and rushed to our family physician, who had treated with cleaning the wound and given Rabipure and Tetanus and had advised us to keep the wound open and clean the wound three times a day. Subsequently, we went for a pediatric who had considered this to be a Category 3 dog bite and have suggested for immunoglobulin. As per his advise, we have admitted in a hospital and within 5 hours of the exposure, doctors have given him immunoglobulin. As per the child's weight i.e 36.4 Kgs, they have initially suggested immunoglobulin of 720 mu, but because of shortage of the vaccine, they could inject only 600 MU on two wounds by injecting on and across the wound (12 times). Subsequently after 12 hours, they have injected 150 MU on buttocks.
Today is the 5th day and the kid has already been given two dozes of Rabipur & 1 tetanus and while there were no stuthces, wound was closed for initial two days as advised by the doctors and we have kept it open since yesterday.
Kindly advise whether the procedure followed is giving the immunoglobulin on and across the wound is right and the timelines followed are acceptable I.e by giving multiple doses at different intervals.
Would also appreciate if you can suggest some precautions to be followed pls.
