Hello, Sorry To Bother You, But I've Been Trying To

Hello, sorry to bother you, but I've been trying to figure this out: my younger cousin had Left Heart Syndrome as a baby. When he was born they had to put him right under, keep him under, and put him into surgery immediately. They kept him open, as in his chest was open for the surgery, and they put some clear film like substance over the incision (I think that's the right word) while they weren't working on him. I think it was to keep it sterile. Could you please tell me what the substance was?
